    1993 TDI Ute fuel gauge

Hi, Has anyone had the experience of a part-time/casual fuel gauge, mine works when it feels like it and when it is working the slightest bump sends the needle to the past full position. Any help would be great. Thanks Chris

The needle on the gauge going intermittently to past full would indicate a short to earth on the wire from the sender to the dash.
look for damaged wire insulation at the fire wall and at the sender.

Have a similar but not identical issue with my 300Tdi. Sometimes it appears to be reading correctly base on kms travelled and other times will read anywhere, but never right off the scale.

PO apparently installed replacement tank and new sender unit.

    So will follow with interest.

    As mentioned in first reply
The rear wiring loom enters the drivers side chassis rail near the fuel tank and exits at the firewall.
On a 93 I would be amazed if you didn’t have at least one circuit that had abraded through and shorting.

Search on AULro you’ll find the resistance range for the sender and gauge and can simply test each unit. Assuming they check out okay, just run new sender wire from sender to gauge and make sure earths to fuel tank and dash are good.
