Cut your losses with this workshop. Put it in a tilt tray and take it to another mechanic. You are getting taken for a ride.

Yes I agree. Charging way to much. Give Dave at Toorak tractor in Braeside a call. He is really great to deal with and might give you a better option and price to finish it off.
    Cheers

A transfercase rebuild kit is about $300+, and should take about a day to remove, disassemble and reassemble.
Or just buy a reco transfercase from ashcrofts direct to whatever spec you need in the vicinity of $2k.

True I’m realising with reco box price and install labour I’m up around $say maybe $3500 then I would have to add flat tray price and hassle involved iefinding new repairer, time of work etc I a i am at this instance going to end up at about same outcome as in price but with whole lot of hassle .Ill take this as a very expensive learning curve and hope te work is as good as everybody says it it is .

    Hi John,

Feel for you with this one after reading your thread, this is not the best intro to Land Rover, Land Rover does tend to be a very steep learning curve when things aren't quite as they should be, on the other hand when right they will serve you well.

I don't really have much to add, certainly sounds like you are being taken advantage of, in regard to the tilt tray, if you are in the RAC push the car into the road and give them a call, tell them the transfer case has gone (they won't believe you in the literal sense) and need to be taken to a repairer, they will no doubt happily oblige, problem one fixed......... tick. I did this once when I wanted to get my head fixed, the repairer gave me a right tale of woe and was going to charge me a gazzilion dollars, so I got the RAC to take the Disco home and did it myself.

Someone local to you on the forum will be able to tell you where to take your Landy, someone has already mentioned someone else.

Stick with it John it will be worth it in the long run.

Ye I was quoted $750 for a service ,wa happy with that. Then $400 to do gasket behind cooler under manifold (no probs) then $1200 for leak on transfer (again no probs)Then after removal told as needs to be pulled apart machined ,re-sleeved,put back together re-fitted all up I’ll be in for nearly 6k 😳 so from what I’ve learnt if reco box is going to set me back $2500 anyway in reality I’m looking at say $1500 pull out pull apart send away machine put back together and re-fit .Its probably expensive but considering amount of work not as bad as originally guessed .At least tats what I’m telling y self . Hey

    I feel your pain.
I, too, bought a defender TD5 eight months ago with the expectation of spending about $5K to get it sorted but we are now closer to $10K and we are doing all the work ourselves! We are currently rebuilding the braking system and still have the transfer case rebuild and clutch replacement ahead of us although we have all the parts.
It will be worth it in the end….it will be worth it in the end….it will be worth it in the end!

Mmm...far too costly I agree. You could alway put up with a small leak😎

Mine was repaired but leaked again within 12 months...I just ignore it now🙄

    Oil is cheaper😆
