2010 Defender 2.4 intermittent starting problems

    Hi there,

I’ve been having an intermittent starting issue with my Puma in that sometimes, usually when she’s cold, she’ll almost refuse to start. It’ll crank, the ECU relay will flicker 20 or 30 times, it’ll throw a “ECU relay disenergized early” code and eventually it may start, coughing and farting to life with a bit of white smoke.

As it’s cranking the temp gauge on the ECU will bounce around from cold to hot.

I’ve tried replacing the ECU relay a couple of times which was initially suggested and carried out by Graeme Cooper Automotive in St Peters however the problem seems to still exist.

What are thoughts for further diagnostics? I’ve checked ECU wiring and manufacture date (as per the related LR service bulletin), replaced the starter battery and ECU relay, checked fuses.

The ECU is running a performance tune from Bruce Davis Performance Landies.

    Ideas?

A further guess (my favourite one 2010 Defender 2.4 intermittent starting problems): any chance it's the ignition switch, i.e. the one on the end of the key barrel? They are prone to failing and causing random errors.

To follow on with that theory, and/or help develop others: when you DO get the car started, does it run OK? In asking that I'm trying to figure if it's a starting circuit thing, or a running circuit thing.
