The engine the OP has is a 2.7lt Territory engine so it should be ok as far as reliability goes...
I loved my TD5 defender when I had it.
Bigger inter cooler, remap, a touch more boost, bigger exhaust and decat.
It had so much get up and go. The next stage for me would have been putting and auto in it because it so too much of a tractor.
But man that motor impressed me more than any motor I’ve ever had. And how much more you could get out of it without doing heaps. I miss it and occasionally look at TD5 disco 2’s dreaming of a little project car.

Question???
Didn't Ford keep the intellectual property rights for the TD5, and it's descendent ended up in the Ranger and the BT50???
As for TDV6s I've come across a few written off because of failures on two rear cylinders. These were D3 engines. D4??? Territorys seem OK.
Any comment?
Cheers

The TD5 was totally a Landrover engine with no link to BMW or Ford. The 5 cylinder engine in the Ranger and BT50 is a development of the Ford Puma line of 4 cylinder engines that started in the Transit (and in the Puma Defenders) and has no relationship with the Landrover TD5 other than its 5 cylinder configuration.

Understand that neither Ford or BMW had anything to do with TD5, Did know that :0)
However, the LR TD5 had some very good production engineering values developed by LR. (not real good for O/H though, as I understand). Hence Ford perhaps kept the intellectual property rights of the design, after all Ford owned those rights at the time of sale to TATA..............and the Landie TD5 not used in another TATA product????
As an aside re car companies perfidy :0) Paint on my SVX (comes from Rangie ie "exclusive" Santorini Black, a metal flake black) is identical to paint found on a Ford F250 (parked mudguard to mudguard :0) We didn't actually check the codes)
I do admit to have not looked under the bonnet of a Ranger or BT50 but the sound is redolent of Landie TD5.

SupporterIf you have a peek at a stripped 3.2, it bears zero resemblance to the TD5's design. Cam drive train, oil pump, etc .. nothing in that areas remotely resembles the TD5.
Ford even had the rights to the Volvo D5(by ownership) at one time .. and yet they still ignored that design type too.
So for a while, Ford had 3 different 5 cyl diesel engine design types within it's group!

If i'm correct there was documented failures for the early gen TDV6 built for LR to have bottom end bearing failures. The bearing race/case (i think) spun blocking the oil gallery. By the time the TDV6 in the Territory (circa MY11) was released the problem was sorted. If you get excited by the thought of a cheap territory TDV6, the auto 6sp in the Ford is different to the LR ZF variant. AFAIK Ford had particular requirements for their ZF auto. Ford had a 450nm variant for the NA barra and 600nm variant for the V8, BarraT. Not sure was the TDV6 (440nm) got but i'd bet they cheaped out and used the 450nm variant (the Ranger is 480nm and the MT82 is rated to 500nm). The ZF 6HP26 is better suited to the right hand drop of the LT230, it doesn't have the valve body extend out as much as the 6R80 in the Ranger etc which fouls the front prop. Either way a TDV6 from an AWD Territory with 6sp auto would be a solid base for a RRC or D1 that is a hwy cruiser. I think (and Glenn can confirm) that the OP uses Simtek Body Logic to run the engine.
