Fairly common for the plastic caged needle bearing in the extension housing to fail, ussually only makes noise in 5th gear though.
Mine started to fail at 240000km.
Changed while in the vehicle.

Gday All.
Hoping for some advice and maybe even someone local to test drive to diagnose?
My td5 130 has developed a whine and I’m about to take her on a trip up the coast this Friday, 1/2 tonne trailer behind, loaded w, family, camping gear, etc etc. Intended to do some beach work, a few mtb shuttles and general rovering in the bush.
But....
This noise seems mainly apparent in 3rd,4th,5th under any power, no matter how slight but disappears on deceleration.
Clutch depressed, it’s gone. Makes me think it’s not the diff’s.
Gearbox in neutral at speed, no noise.
Transfer in neutral and run through gears, no noise. Maybe not transfer case then.
All oils are full and to spec
There’s also a rattle on deceleration that sounds like an exhaust mount or loose heat shield, that may or may not be related.
My mechanic is having a well deserved break and I don’t really know anyone else local who knows Defender’s.
I could drive it to Allfourby4 in Newy or to Davis Performance - both of which are at least 3 1/2 hrs return and, if it’s a gearbox issue, I risk major damage if a bearing or similar, lets go.
Alternatively I could go to the LR dealer at West Gosford but not sure it would be worth it???
I live in Bensville. Any long term owners out there got time to have a drive and listen?
Below is a link to a pretty average recording of my truck, that will most likely, just attract some jest. But hey, fwiw

I’m not asking for any guarantees or assurances, just some advice, if possible.
Thanks.
Col
