    Defender TD5 130 - dead & won't start

    Morning all,
I haven't posted much here, but hoping I can delve into the collective accumulated knowledge/experience.

Driving my TD5 (1999) defender to work this morning ~10min on a country road. Was speaking on the phone (bluetooth to an updated head unit) which dropped out, and then on looking at the speedo, speed was showing as 0 and fuel gauge at 0. Stereo was acting a bit funny as well so I pulled over, turned the truck off and then tried to restart, with no action on turning the key. Some dash lights, but not the battery light. Headlights, indicators work ok, but completely dead on starting. Had to get my wife to come and collect me, the car is still on the side of the road and I'll sort out a NRMA tow if I can't get it sorted.

I suspect it's the alternator that is shagged, but are there any other LR specific issues that could be at play here?

Haven't got access to a multimeter at this point, but are there any issues if I start from a battery jump pack and drive to the auto-electrician in town (~5km)?

    thanks in advance.

Need to get a multimeter on the battery, and check connection from battery to alternator via starter motor, sounds like vehicle was running on battery alone which is now flat. I had exactly the same experience after a starter motor repair when I didn't re-instate the cables properly. If connections OK, check alternator output. I don't see any reason you cant try and limp it 5kms, but I'm sure the real experts will be along soon enough.

Thanks for the reply. Got it towed by the NRMA to an auto electrician, they'll have a look at it on Monday and see what the issue is, but suspect it's a dodgy alternator that has meant the battery has gone flat. A bit of a pain, considering we've gone through the same with the Prado 6 months ago.
