300tdi centre silencer removal ?
Has anyone removed centre silencer on 300tdi defender? Any performance gains? Worth it or waste of time? Im running vnt turbo, upgraded intercooler and pump mods atm.

On a 300Tdi Deefer the centre muffler is a straight through, perforated tube design.
I've heard various people claim hand on heart that removing it gave better spool up/more power, but I'm damned if I know how it could?
The stock system is only 60mm OD, a proper 2.5" or better, 2.75" system would help.
I ran a 3" mandrel bent system. Total overkill, but back when I made it 3" tube and bends were much cheaper than 2.75".
On a 130 it did help, dropping max EGT's by about 25° and extending the rev range in each gear to the limiter, but the difference wasn't huge on it's own.
With other mods it helps.

prior changeout
I replaced my fatigue cracked original 1994 centre muffler with a hot dog. One gear higher up my test hill and a bit noisy in tunnels. Whilst changing the clutch found it was just about full of soot so a straight pipe is probably the way to go.

I left mine out when I had a new exhaust fitted.
Don’t reckon I noticed any improvement, did change the note/sound

I replaced my exhaust with a straight(ish) pipe and a single resonator. Can't say I noticed any improvement in performance but it did provide space to mount an extra fuel tank between the chassis rails.

Great idea. Fitted a 2 and 3/4 straight thru to mine. Turbo spools up WAY faster. EGT'S climb quicker too, but I think that's because the gasses were stalling in the manifold and can now escape freely. Sounds like a TD42! Great sound.
