95 Defender 300 TDI Fuel Line Damaged

I was very unfortunate to have a Antechinus (native rat) chew through my fuel line. I replaced about a 900mm length of the line. To bleed the system I have pumped the Lift pump lever about 500 times while having the bleed screw above the filter open, but no sign of fuel or bubbles yet. With the bleed screw open and the accelerator fully pressed down I can start and run the engine okay but still no fuel or bubbles coming out of the bleed screw. If I retighten the bleed screw the motor snuffs out.

Hoping someone can help me solve this air in the fuel line problem. Do I just have to run the engine longer? Would it help if I also opened the union on top of the filter that has the line that returns the fuel to the tank?

Also a very basic question for some; does the lever of the lift pump lever get parked in the upper position?

if the pump is on the cam lobe then you wont get squiddly by pumping the priming handle.

to prime it crack open the little bleed nut and pump at it and it will pick it up.

if the engine is able to start and run and hold idle its just a waiting game.

if its very slow to fill you may have a line restriction.

    A few things
First despite protestations of some 300tdi are pretty good at self bleeding.
If it were me I’d just lean on the key and crank till she fires
Will run like a rabid dog for a bit but then should settle down

Assuming of course you have fully fixed any air leaks that is

Now the lift pump, it will only actually pump if the cam is off the pump - if you are not getting any fluid moving just hit the key for a bit and try again
Having said that - the Manual lift pumps are not 100% reliable.

My hunch is you still have a small air leak in the system some place - otherwise you’d be running by now

So if the rats dropped plastic particles into the pipe would they be in the fuel filter now or in the pipe up near the fuel filter?

potentially in the banjo to the inlet side of the filter.

if the damage was pre sedimentor then they're in the sedimentor.
