    300tdi Air Con removal

    Hey All,

    Hope your all well!

Looking at pulling out my AC condensor on my 300tdi as want to do some testing with airflow into both the intercooler and radiator.
The one on there is some what damaged and blocks a fair bit of flow into the intercooler especially.

My question is, what is the best way of removing just the condensor. Do I need to depressurise it from the valve near the firewall or just under the nuts
slightly on the condensor and let the air leak out? I would assume theres a fair bit of pressure in the system.

    Cheers Declan

Legally the refrigerant needs to be recovered, IIRC a full charge is around 700g.
I have to preface the post with that as I'm in the industry (commercial/industrial) and the fines for illegal release are huge, including loss of license for those of us working with the stuff.

All fittings should be really well sealed, if you can obtain caps for the compressor ports do so, the PAG oil is extremely hygroscopic, you'll have corrosion inside the comp within a month or so if it isn't well sealed. The joys of modern refrigeration oils.

In my experience and testing I agree, that Sanden condenser restricts airflow, I just ended up removing the entire system as I was going to re-engineer it but never got around to it.
I'd have to search, it was a long time ago but I recall the condenser being in place to removed was worth a consistent 3-5* difference in coolant temps on a pretty steep climb at sub 20* ambient. I can't recall the IC temp difference?
There'd be a post here somewhere from 10-12 years ago.
A better condenser with a coarser fin pitch that was wider and taller would be ideal.

spacing the existing condenser forwards by means of panel abuse and relocating the bracings makes a significant difference to radiator temps, but at the cost of increased AC op pressures at the compressor.
