My R380 is quiet on the main shaft loading but whines on 5th. So 4th and 5th sounds like a transfer case whine. Does it do it wrapping out lower gears??
Cheers
Hi there everyone.
My 06 110 whines in 4th gear and even louder in 5th. I have been told that this whine is not coming from the gearbox but from the transfer and is normal and that the R380s are rarely ever quiet in 4th & 5th.
Really ? That sounds strange to me but due to my limited experience I could not argue the point
All comments and advise on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
Is this normal ?
Should I be worried ?
What's going on ?
Cheers John.

No. 1st 2nd & 3rd are fine.
Its 4th & that whine. 5th is annoyingly loud.
I was told this is normal, even from a rebuilt box. I have never head of it being the norm for R380s.
I guess I'm wondering is the 4th & 5th whine
a fact of life for all 380s ?
Its not a fact of life that an R380 is noisy in 4th and 5th
If they are noisy in 5th it indicative that the rear support bearings are worn if you continue the shafts can deflect and the gears can fail.
Your issue with a noisy 4th at the same time is a bit different yes maybe it is the transfer but maybe something else is going on.
You can pull the transfer and rear bearing housing and have a look at the bearings I would replace the 5th gear support bearings and oil pump. If needed to the transfer not that difficult or expensive.
Thanks djam1 for taking the time to give me a well considered reply.
My gearbox and transfer was in fact reconditioned in September 2019 and the whine was there from the day I picked it up. As I could not be without the vehicle for transport I was not able to to take it back to the "repairer" until January 2020.
When I took it back and explained the problem to the mechanic he took the vehicle for a test drive with me and assured me that the noise was normal and almost impossible to eliminate.
Though I now have little confidence in their workmanship and (given what the mechanic told me during the test dive ) integrity, I feel I have no choice but to give them the opportunity, one more time to honour the warranty . I will see how things go from there.
Cheers.
