I am very new to the forum and had my eyes on a puma 90 for a good many years & just purchased myself a 2012 Puma with 76,000 km on the clock.
Just sharing problems that i have encountered(already!) I purchased from a car dealer thus having 90 days statutory warranty. So far no expense on my part.
I have read on some other post of similar issues but would like to create one(with discussions with others) for future members.
I picked up the car 2 weeks ago and on the 1 hour drive home after sitting over 30min on the high way in 6th gear at 100km/hour. The clutch went soft and requires my hand to pick it up back.
Dealer towed the car back replaced the clutch master cylinder. 1 week later i happily picked up my car same drive home 6th gear at 100/km hour. Same issue. This time i see bubbles inside the clutch fluids.
Dealer towed the car back again and have noted the following issues that will be replaced.
Clutch, clutch slave cylinder, bearing & flywheel.
Will update again when the car is fixed(hopefully) by end of next week.
Bit disheartening as i've had ownership of the car for less then half a day!

SupporterAir leak somewhere in the clutch hydraulics, the master is eliminated, leaving the slave which is inside the gearbox.
Consider yourself fortunate. The dealer will have to pay for the gearbox removal and slave cylinder replacement.
You dont have to pay for new clutch, flywheel etc.. But, you can offer them some extra $ and have it done, I would. Pay them for the extra hours and parts but you shouldnt pay for the gearbox removal and refit labour.

SupporterI had a slave cylinder fail on my 2012 Puma. It seems to be a problem that is occuring more often. Unfortunately the slave cylinder is difficult and time consuming to replace.
If the mechnic was in a good mood, or a deal could be made, it would be a good idea to replace the output shaft that also fails whilst the gearbox is out.
Get an Ashcrofts shaft with the modifications done to make it reliable.

There is an update through Ashcroft to the newer style slave cylinder.
You have to purchase a A genuine clutch release bearing to suit the Defender TDCi
Note this part is for the 2.2, VIN number FA459934 onwards, when fitting to an earlier vehicle it is necessary to replace the external valve and adapter also, these are part numbers: LR068981, LR068982
I also found that the spigot bearings were less than ideal.
I would check the output shaft while I was in there.

Was a bit late to ask the mechanic about the output shaft.
In the end the follow was replaced:
Clutch kit(including bearing), clutch slave, sleeve, valve control, adaptor & flywheel. Total cost of parts were $1800.
Car is now running fine and no issues. And hopefully it stays that way for a while.

The flywheel on all 2.4, 2.2 seem to be good quality and its only the odd one that I need to get machined.
