    Replacement 300tdi

    Hi
My sad story is, my 1996 Defender is rather sick.
The symptoms were no oil pressure.
The oil pump has spun on the crankshaft causing the crank pump, rear timing chest, bearing etc to be required.
There were also a few bits of metal in the sump!!
So my predicament is do I replace all the above parts or go for a full recon/new engine.
The engine has done 300k but the head only 100k.
I'm wondering about a short motor?
I have contacted Turners they don't do a short motor and a full is approx $10,000 delivered. Which is considerably more than I want to spend.
It is currently at a Land Rover specialist who is looking into options and prices etc.
    So what are people's thoughts?
Can anyone recommend a engine rebuilder/supplier?
    Thanks for any advice offered.
    Cheers
    Phil

What about an Isuzu 4bd1 conversion?
Has been done by many owners and the engines and bell housings are available

It looks like i'm up for a crank, oil pump and rear timing cover.
The rest of the engine is good.

The bill for the above from a Land Rover specialist (Who I consider very trustworthy) would be very roughly, (me guessing how much labour), $5500 new or $4500 with 2nd hand parts.
So do people think I would be ok to carry on at that?

The head was new 100k ago and turbo, vac pump etc have all been replaced this year.

I have looked into a recon engine or short motor but can only find them in the UK for about $6000 delivered for a short motor. That would come out at about $7500 once I have bought timing cover, belts, gaskets etc and do the work myself.

Any thoughts would be greatly recieved

Personally I'd go more $ and have a 4BD1T installed (ring KLR for info + co$ts). your R380 may need going over). You would hopefully have an engine that would outlast you.

IIRC, the last long motor I got from MR (sans anything driven by a serp belt, starter and the vac pump) cost me something like $6k with the old unit as exchange. I'd be giving them a call first.
