    Cheap Toyo 255s Review

    Some of you may have noticed in recent years there has been a new offering in the 255/85 r16 size from Toyo. Intriguingly there are two types available, the difference being the cheapest have load ratting of 119 and the more expensive version 123 load rated. Price difference between them is around $200 per tyre!!

    I picked up a set of 5 about over 2 year ago for about $220 a tyre. Too cheap to go past! Anyway, I run them on wolf rims, 35psi all round on the road and start at 20psi offroad and haven't needed to go lower than 16psi in sand.

    I've done now almost 30k on them now in a lightly loaded 110, rotating just the 4 after about 10-15k. They have worn evenly, no chipping or damage and they have been driven regularly on some pretty rough tracks. Side walls show no signs of damage despite being driven through ruts at low pressures. Driven down and up plenty of rough, loose and sharp stone/ boulders too around hills of Queenstown and west coast tas with no tyre related issues.

    They do well in sloppy stuff, quiet on road (well can't notice in 300tdi anyway) I would say they are a softer compound than km2s I had in the same size but firmer than dullers I had in 285.

    All in all, if you come across a good deal in these I'd say give them a go, especially considering the lack of choice in the 255 size. However, a mate of mine has just picked up some Yokohama geolander in 255 85r16 for around $320 so I'm interested to see how they go too!

    Interested if anyone else has had a go on the cheap toyos?

    dam good tyres, you wouldn't find them for $220 now

    Many of the Jap brigade run Toyo,with very good results,AT,RT,and MT.

    Most seem to run the RT.

    Yeah I've got a set of the open country AT as well but in 265 size. They seem really good too but just a shame they don't come in the 255s.

    I'm keen to try a 255/85 on my Tdi300... How have u found them on the Tdi300 in regards to to taking off on inclines, etc? Have u noticed much loss in power?

    Admittedly, the scenario doesn't occur often but a really steep hill start and maybe; offroad would be in low range so no issue. There has been the odd time pulling a trailer up a steep driveway where I popped into low range but I would do that anyway. It's probably an issue if you had to do a steep hill start every day - otherwise avoid it.

    I do think the 300tdi feels much more settled at highway speeds on 255s compared to 265s. BUT it feels like it works harder (and gets warmer) going up hills on highway in 3rd and 4th.

    Probably depends a bit on how well the 300 is running. Mine goes quite well with rebuilt and tuned injecter pump, full size front mount intercooler, uprated turbo fan.. all those one percenters help. But the intercooler maybe affecting airflow too over the radiator..

    The other thing is having the right offset wheels. Wolf at positive 20 are perfect for 255s, no scrubbing and no crap up the side of the car!

    The last bit is low range 1st gear crawling down very steep slopes may be affected as it feels it could roll away a bit faster than expected - but this is minimal.

    I ran 255/85 for years on a 130 300Tdi, I think I went through three sets of muddies. (BFG and Maxxis)

    Towing you need low range second gear for starts, there's no way around that, and mine went pretty well, increased fueling, big exhaust, big pipe inlet.

    Highway use I felt the gear ratios suited better than with 235/85's, and for the problem of too high a low/low i fixed by installing a Maxi Drive 30% lower low range.

    I just purchased a set 135’s to replace the conti’s I had 14 days ago, Paid $300/ tyre from tyre power in newcastle, very surprised how quiet they are on the HWY for muddies , early days yet but find them a lot smoother than the conti’s , though I did get 80K km out of the conti’s
