Because it’s breathing more air freely, rather than having to fight to pull it in.
Installed a Nugget Stuff Airbox into the Defender (2015) a few days ago.
I already had the Nugget sealed airbox installed into my Safari snorkel, so the job was a bit easier.,
After driving it, it seems like there is more power. Could be placebo effect, but after a few days driving I reckon its gone more power. Got me stumped why.

The filter is the most restrictive part. The stock box and all it's gaps probably alleviate that to a big degree...
After my install, I didn't notice any performance gain, only a bit more induction noise at idle.

i didn't notice any performance improvement when i fitted the Nuggett air box (i have his intake kit too to a safari snorkel). I can hear a deep throaty gasp of air from the snorkel under full load (accelerating up a hill). It sounds like a restriction to me, like the intake can't get enough air. I had the mantec snorkel when i first installed the air filter housing and it sent the restriction indicator into the red even with a new filter. The safari snorkel is better as the restriction indicator doesn't go into red with a new filter. If i had the skill and access to equipment, i'd like to do a flow test so see if the system does flow with less restriction. Not saying it is not a good bit of kit but the jury is out that there is less restriction on my anecdotal evidence.

I fitted the restrictor gauge to the factory airbox pre-fitting the Nugget one and could send it red under moderate load.
I can still pull it close to that now, with a 170 tune and some serious right welly but nowhere near as easily. It now takes a seriously decent load and high rpm.
The gulp you hear is just that - the big gulp as it spools and drags the air in.
Could be achieved for under 10 bucks - a differential pressure gauge (water Manometer) using some clear plastic tube and a plank of wood to mark a scale on would give you a point to point pressure differential.
Measure mm of H2O and can easily convert this to psi / kPa, or your chosen flavour of pressure units
In this particular instance, put a barb fitting into the filter indicator hole, and one in the snorkel inlet. make sure the hose run is long enough so as not to get a filter full of water...

I should note I also have the BAS 170hp mod and intercooler fitted.
I still have the cat, so not sure if Decat would improve things more.
But, again tonight after driving it a bit more, the Defender is faster for sure.

Similar on ours, except after a series of unfortunate events the cat seems to have fallen off.
