sounds like the bearings in the gearbox are shot. 25 years of hard work had its toll on the poor gearbox. time for a strip down and refresh.

SubscriberHi, my 95 130 has slowly been devloping a whine over the last 20,000km, nothing dramatic, just there. I replaced the clutch around the time i noticed the whine start, mostly when changing down a gear. I thought maybe i had t got enough oil into tje spigot bush? Anyway, the whine isnt just on change, its always there, quieter in 4th and 5th, louder in lower gears. I wondered if it could be the transfer box or the gearbox? If i changed the oil to something different, say in the gear box, would you think i could hear a difference? I run usual 80-90 gearoil in transfer and manual vmx in the gear box, i was thinking changing to a fully synthetic to see if it changes the whine? Im set to install an Ashcrofts o/haul kit but wondering if i have compleyely diagnosed the whine Thoughts??

SubscriberStill contemplating changing oil type. It’s only done 290km, experienced a variety of conditions but mostly an every day commuter. Changed oil every 20,000km, no apparent increase in the fluff on the sump magnet. Still, there’s an Ashcroft bearing kit sitting on the bench, just gotta bite the bullet, find a suitable bearing puller and press and get into it.
