    Which hub seal is best - RTC3511 or FRC3099 or FTC4785G

    Hi all

    I am often changing hub seals on my 1998 Defender 130.

    I have always used RTC3511 but after just watching a Britannica Restorations video it looks like the seal he is using is FRC3099 or FTC4785G

    So now I am a little confused as to which is the right seal.

    Looking at the parts book - FRC3099 seems to be an inner stub axle seal.

    You shouldn’t really be changing them all that often…..although you are pretty handy on the tools just trying to think what the contributing factors could be…..

    stub axle condition?

    Installing the seal the correct depth and nice a square, I’m sure there is an official depth.

    Greasing the seal prior fitting the hub.

    Wheel bearing adjustment

    Yep, RTC3511 by Corteco works well for me too (and I run oil lubed bearings).

    The inner part of the drive flange works very well as a drifter for the seal. It even drives the seal to the correct depth! (Well, on an 84 110 it does anyway).

    I find most leaks are due to grooves wearing on the stub axle facing.

    When I pulled it all down I did find one the springs from within the seal floating around and there is very minor marks on the surface of the stub axle, I will try some emery paper tonight, but I think it may be too far gone.

    I have the MD HD drive flanges, but never used these as a drift to insert the seal. but will use this method now

    I last did the seals this time 3 years ago before a trip to Birdsville.

    I have this feeling the seal was just not sitting square inside the hub.

    Better order a stub axle now.

    I have had much success in drifting the seal in at a different depth to avoid the grooves created on the stub axle. I've only had to replace one stub axle, which is not bad considering the vehicle has done 600,000 km.

    A couple of little blobs of silicon on the spring and inside of the seal keeps the spring in place.
