Just drive to Syd in 4th.
Hey Brains Trust.
My R380 gear box (in a 2000 TD5 130) has a loudish whirling noise in 5th under load. All other gears sound ok and it occurs in low-range as well as high. The gear box oil level is fine.
The vehicle has lowish km (135k) but I've just done 35k around Australia headily loaded (3.5T ish) and it was previously an RFS vehicle and may have done some towing.
Tricky thing is we're in Alice Springs, heading home to Sydney (3000km or so) over the next 3 weeks. We've just driven 800km from Uluru in 4th which was ok but unusually quiet.
Questions:
- I'm assuming the rear layshaft bearing is on its way out. Anyone have an alternate theory?
- Our intention is to drive back to Sydney in 4th. Does anyone have experience with how long I can run the box for without it completely dying?
- Special bonus question: does anyone in (or near) Alice have a recon box lying around?
Thanks - Phil
Pretty much. Fifth is unnecessary to get it home.[/QUO
Check or change the oil. If it appears to be leaking carry enough to ensure daily level checks going home. The new synthetic stuff changes the noise level but if leakiing keep the ATF up to it. Don't thrash it going home.
True. Low oil killed mine. Didn't take long either. Oil cooler pipe came loose.

Thanks guys. We had the oil changed yesterday (thanks to the friendly guys at Suttons who fitted me in despite being booked out for 2 weeks). There was a bit more iron filings on the magnet than normal given the time since the last change, but not too much and no lumps. We're heading east tomorrow at a leisurely pace...

When it comes time to repair, the guys at 4wdindustries do rebuilds and also offer a heavy duty bearing to stop it happening again, same as Ashcroft do but without the bad exchange rate and shipping.
Does sound like the rear layshaft bearing to me. If possible, and now forewarned, I'd stick to keeping it in 4th gear.
I'd suggest that bearing failing is highly likely to cause more damage when it fails. I sheared the layshaft itself at the bearing point (so the front thicker part of the shaft was still retained in the bearing), but just the rear section with the big, heavy gear broke the gears on the output shaft when it let go and was moving around on its own.
Since my failure and examination of the gearbox, I've come to understand that the R380 5th gear (and reverse) design is fairly weak, and consequently only ever tow anything in 4th gear.
Good luck!

Its true & do not tow loads in 5th gear lay shaft bearing problems occur.Head wind, large tyres heavy loads low in revs loading up driveline all contribute.Forth gear does not run through lay shaft & can run all day with loads but dont over rev motor.Penrite make a good transmission oil for your landy. just Ph tech. assist they will sort it out.Happy travels.
