Thread: Whirring on newly rebuild LT230 > 60km/h

Hi there,

I've just rebuild an LT230 which has been an interesting exercise for my 2010 Puma 110 and after about 20km of driving, I've noticed a fairly audible whirring coming from the transfer only when it's loaded with drive (not coasting). I'm thinking we either have a bearing or preload issue but was hoping to see if the group could shed more light here. Dave Ashcroft seems to think that it's likely the input teeth or the intermediate proload and I'm inclined to think the latter.

When setting the preload I noticed that after setting it, the gears would bind up together and require a bit of force to get rolling again. Even then, I noticed sticking points in the rotation where it seemed tighter and harder to turn until they were overcome. I'm wondering if I've overset the preload however I was very much aiming for the +1.25nm that LR specify in the manual (calculated with rope and a spring scale. At the time I passed it off as normal but now I'm very much questioning that. As for the noise, my mind has me thinking that it's the intermediate bearings - I'll have time in the next week to pop the cover and inspect for movement, etc, what do we think I should be looking for? Hoping I can get away lightly by just replacing the intermediate bearings and torquing the intermediate shaft nut properly.

I should mention, that I've replaced the intermediate gear set as I was worried that last one would have gotten a bit hot and perhaps altered the tempering.

I had mine rebuilt and same thing happened. Took it back to the shop and they pulled it all apart put back together, even rebuilt the gearbox too.

Whines still there 40k km on and it hasn't missed a beat so wouldn't stress too much perhaps!
