Sounds like it was filled to leaking level rather than 2.2L exact amount. Would increase pressure on seals I would think...? If no leakage refill with correct volume and count yourself lucky!

SupporterHi all. As per the thread title, I just dropped my gearbox oil for the first time in my MY15 Defender 90 (@ 36,000km), and got out just over 5L!! I've owned it essentially since new (dealer demo with 400km on the clock when I bought it), so I'm 99.9% certain it's been this way since the factory... and certainly has been this way since the dealer.
There's mention from others here and on other forums about getting more than 3L out (despite the fact the factory fill is only supposed to be 2.4L), but I've never heard/read about anyone getting 5!
Should I be worried? Anything I need to consider or keep an eye on?

SupporterIt must have been either pressure-filled or filled to the leak level of some other plug, because I got the shock of my life when oil came absolutely pi$$ing out the filler plug hole.
No sign of leaking (amazingly), so maybe I just count myself lucky! Feels a bit wrong to be driving around with 2.2L in something that until today had more than double that... even though I know it's correct.
Haha yep I can believe that. I've heard of overfilling before because the oil jockey thought it was fill til spill.

I just posted the same thing on my work facebook page.
5.5lt out of the gearbox, thats not fill to the normal filler plug, it must be the top filler plug towards the front.
In my example the customer asked me to look at why there is a huge oil leak (more than normal for a Defender).
If your gearbox is not leaking then leave it at that now with the correct 2.2lt
