    FWIW, two of our cars (different Euro marques, not LR) had the sensor in the RH door mounted external mirror.

    Isn't the D4 one a little bump in the centre top of the dash ie near the bottom edge of the windscreen just rearwards of the windscreen vents, and complete with a plastic hat/cover? I don't understand how, but if that's it, it seems to read ambient temp pretty well.

    No, That is a sunlight sensor for the auto a/c . If you cover that with a dash mat it will upset the operation of the climate control air.

    Installed the sensor in the space behind headlight.

    It is large space that will not be affected by the heat created by the headlight at night.
