Thread: Gear lever gate spring for 3rd/4th not working

I had the same issue last year after doing the clutch. In my case I just took the assembly apart and put it back together following the workshop manual to the letter. If I recall there was some special positioning or some such when tightening it all up. On the second attempt it was ok and has been fine ever since.

I dont think I get what the issue is but...

The gear stick assembly, so stick and the plastic housing and the bottom of the stick with the metal ball and the plastic cup on the end come out easily as one complete lot.
They go back in the same way. (yes the plastic housing can be and sometimes does separate )

*Put the gearbox in neutral if it's not already.
*Remove the plastic cup on the end of the ball, grease it, put it back on the ball, this helps in stopping the plastic cup from moving as you put it in.
*Gently slide the complete gear stick assembly into the top alloy housing.
*Sometimes it slides straight in, other times it requires lifting up, line up the plastic cup again, try again.

*A note, there is 2 metal collars that fit diagonally on the top shift assembly (the 4 bolts that hold it on) these aid in the shift assembly correct alignment.
*Most 2.2 have the collars, some 2.2 and 2.4 dont have them.

I've investigated further. There is a rubber boot under the end of the inner gear stick (the end that actuates the gear selector).

It looks a bit swollen and likely because of contact with moly grease, instead of rubber grease being used.

The centralizing springs (which position the gear stick at the 3rd/4th gait position in neutral) work fine until the 4 small bolts on the inner gear stick assy are tightened up. Then progressively it deteriorates until only the reverse position spring works. Is swelling of the boot likely to cause this?

*nope, the rubber boot on the end really doesnt do a lot.
*when you say the 4 small bolts, do you mean the torque head ones that retain the square plastic assembly into the top alloy housing?
*If so, it sounds like you are putting the plastic cup that is ment to be attached to the ball on the end of (as you call it) the inner gear stick into the metal cup on the gearbox selector?
if you do it arse about like it sounds, it will stop it all from shifting correctly and gets tight as you tighten up the "4 small bolts".
