    Steering Jitters

    Hey,

    New here I have skimmed but probably blind.

    I picked up a TD5 110 and working my way through, bits and bobs, but stumped what might be causing the steering gitters.

    I have checked and done:
    • Wheel Alignment / balance
    • wheel bearings
    • Drop arm and Track rods
    • Damper Bushes
    • Prop shaft looks and feel good while under car


    What have people done to solve?

    worn panhard rod bushes will give you a shimmy in the steering. I've flogged out many panhard bushes. The worst i experienced was at 60 kph the steering wheel violently shook to a degree that you couldn't hold the wheel. If it sped up or slowed down it went way. Also had it at +/-80kph. Next after that i'd check the radius arm bushes. The 60kph experience was a combination of panhard and radius arm bushes. One fed into the other.

    Check also the swivel pin preload on both swivel pin housing.

    Described exactly at 60-80 clicks is where it’s at but only when steering is dead straight.

    Ordered some bushes so will have a look thanks.

    Possibly could be radius arm bushes, and perhaps incorrect toe out, or maybe bent axle housing. And the other likelihood is that it is a combination of factors - fix one and it goes away, but comes back soon, when one of the other factors gets a little bit worse.!

    The fact that it is only in the straight ahead steering position does raise the possibility that there are grooves in the swivel bearing races in the straight ahead position, so that there is no preload in this position.
