    No talk.

Hi, can someone offer some advice on where to start looking to solve this problem. My 300tdi has NO low revs talk. Having to slip the clutch a lot on the slightest incline to get moving. Don’t know what it was like when i bought the vehicle as i did a complete overhaul of the engine, boxes and rear diff/axle unit when i purchased it. I didn’t dismantle the injector pump or turbo, (just refitted as is), but i do expect them to be in good condition as the whole vehicle has almost no wear visible. Looking forward for your comments, thanks, Keith.

    Torque..

1500-1800 rpm on most of them in my experience if pulling any sort of weight, before you get a decent amount

Things I would recommend to look into.

There is a 'vacuum'(or more accurately a pressure hose) going from turbo wastegate side to IP at the fuel pin head(flat square-ish area with four bolts at each corner). Pressure test this line to confirm that you aren't losing pressure to the pump which won't add fuel as required. I had a situation where the hose was dried up at the end and a tiny leak must have been happening. trimming the end and replacing the line onto the barb fitting made a difference to initial take off for me.

injector timing. While you say you didn't touch the IP, fitting it 'incorrectly timed' by a tooth or tenth of a mil too little lift can mess things up. You say complete overhaul of the engine .. etc. So that means IP timing could be not so spot on.

Also, as you hadn't got a reference point to start with hard to advise on how to adjust the 'smoke screw'. But you should do this with caution.. and really should have a exhaust temp(EGT) probe fitted .. which is trivially easy to do on a tdi.
But back on the fueling hose situation I had, I then travelled on a journey of tweaking the pump this way and that to achieve a balance of power/economy/smoke/reliability that I'm happy with in mine. It is easy to do, but can be tedious as you want a bit more of this, but need to balance another aspect. but the importance of a exhaust temp probe can't be understated as you can melt your engine if eyes are not keeping a close watch.

There is a nicely laid out PDF of how to tweak a Tdi pump to achieve desired results(to your liking). But the smoke screw in particular is what you want to learn about. a small screw adjustment can get you quite a large gain in immediate take off ability(ie. off idle torque). But it will cause other side effects(smoke and heat).
After fixing the slight leak on the fueling hose, I pumped up the smoke screw, and was nice to have that more instant power off idle, but I over did it and now blew too much smoke(and a tad more EGT value!), so dialled it back a bit, then a bit more and a bit more... etc, etc. (I did say it can be tedious!). I reckon I must have tweaked just this one adjustment about 10 times in a couple of weeks just to see the effects in various situations.

There is no way you will get talk out of an engine. Maybe a bit of chatter/clatter.

What you are seeking is called torque.

Does it have the standard wheel/tyre combo. Bigger tyres will kill a 300TDi D1.
