    110 Bent Chassis...

Hi all, my 300tdi 110 seems to have a slight chassis bend. Bought last year, took me a little while to notice that the car seems to sit slightly lower on the passenger side, only when looking at the front. I thought/hoped it might be a suspesnion thing, but after having the 2" lift HD suspension deleted for fresh, factory spec shocks and coils all around, the car still sits a bit funny. I've measured the chassis height from the ground on a level concrete clab, and it seems that the N/S dumb iron sits about 10mm lower than O/S, and the top of the front shock tower is around 5-10mm lower on the N/S than the O/S. No difference from one side to the other at the front radius arm mounts, and ditto at the rear radius arm mounts and the first cross member behind the rear axle.

All that being said, I don't feel that a 10mm difference in height should be as perceptable as it seems to be. Any thoughts on this would be apprceciated! Also, any advice on chassis straightening? Thanks for reading, any responese are greatly appreciated! Cheers

It is possible it is accident damage, but my feeling is that 10mm is withing the manufacturing tolerance!

I'd thought so too... I don't have a bad eye but I wouldn't have thought I'd be able to perceive 10mm difference in height from one side to the other

    Mm or inches, John?

so while you will find that the front, passenger side coil sits lower than the drivers side, often the rear especially if its a more load orientated coil are the same heights.

realistically you need to have the chassis on a flat surface suspended off the suspension and support it with the same height blocks/stands front to front, rear to rear (if you know what I mean) etc and see if it sits "off" one

IIRC the front springs are side specific. Is it possible that they have been fitted to the wrong side?

Inches is at the upper tolerance level for a Defender, cm's would generally be acceptable, and mm's only if it is a diecast toy one.

Perhaps you could clamp a couple of uprights to the front and place a bar across them, like a hurdle, measured at equal heights off the chassis at the front, and eyeball it against the windscreen frame to spot if it is parallel. The base of the bulkhead is not vertically adjustable from the chassis mounts, so the bottom of the windscreen would give you a reference.

As mentioned above factory fresh, the vehicle will be slightly higher on the driver's side. That is why when buying springs you have to get the correct springs for the relevant side.

Thanks for your respones everyone, they've been very helpful. I had no idea about the factory spec height difference on the passenger side, I'd be interested to know exactly why they do this! I've had a look around some of the UK forums as well, and I think it's very likely that what I'm noticing is just that height difference, which is a relief! Thanks all
