How do I take the speedo out on my 94 Defender? I suspect that I have to take the steering wheel off yes?

Pull the binnacle back. Reach in behind and press the plastic piece together to release the cable. Then pull the binnacle out fully. The steering wheel can stay but it is easier to manage with it off.

As it happens, I replaced the speedometer in my '91 Perentie with a new digital VDO yesterday without removing the steering wheel, just eased the instruments back far enough to get access. It was tight but I had enough room and from memory the instrument cluster looked the same as same as my old 300tdi. I guess a couple of subtle differences might be enough to stop it moving back far enough though, I'd try it first though.
