I may be rejected or even ejected….

Gday All & Happy New Year

I have another confession to make……
    Forgive me farver, for I’ve…..
    bought a Disco.

    It’s only a Disco 2
    is that cardinal?

Insurance took 6 weeks to come through and shopping for my 5th Defender nearly sent me the rest of the way round……. I may be rejected or even ejected….*I may be rejected or even ejected….🤪I may be rejected or even ejected….
Especially with post pandemic prices - some poor folk are still dwelling in the bubble of ludicrousness that occurred during lockdowns……
    Maybe it’s long Covid pricing?

So, I’ve bought a reasonably priced disco with lots of kms on the body, not so many on the engine and just a coil conversion all round, pretty much no other mods.

C’mon guys… I still own a Defender 🥺 (It’s got some v nasty electrolysis and some other water damage from my short submarine journey and I cannot negotiate repairs at this stage I may be rejected or even ejected….

Anyway, I’m going to take a few bits off the 110 & save them for my next defender 🤞 and maybe use some stuff on my disco where I can.

I don’t actually have possession of said disco, so can’t eyeball it and I’ve not owned or even driven a disco til the test drive 2 days ago.

Any idea if I can swap my air locking 06 defender front diff into a 2003 disco 2 or would it be easier to swap lockers from housings?

I know the rear suspension is completely different; no a frame vs trailing arms etc and the springs are different diameter too from memory, but can the rear diff also be fitted without a lot of alteration?

Are there adapter plates from 7” to 6” diam. springs or is it a fab job?

I have a Tom Woods dc front shaft, I guess that’s a different length in the Disco?

These may well be stupid questions but I’ll admit, I’m quite disco illiterate

Shes not full of mud or silt, in fact she’s quite clean!
Seats and hood lining have dried out and are not really affected to look at, though the seat springs may be rusting I may be rejected or even ejected…. they aren’t mouldy/don’t smell.
Panels are all pin striped and there are dings here and there but no structural rust at all, doors are all rust free and just a little panel damage on ds rear from recovery.

    Col

    just a suggestion......

while boats are usually launched by submerging the trailer canoes are light enough to be manhandled to the water, you dont need to deep ford the landy to get them floated.

while lots of parts will interchange into a D2 anythign that bolts onto the body/chassis of a deefer wont directly fit, from memory the diff centers should swap over but you'll have to retap the airlines in the disco casing.

the springs from memory are the same diameter but will be the wrong rates for the D2 (most likely)

    Good luck with it.

It looked like a Td5 Defender?

The Defenders front airlocker should just go across to the Disco and can be used front or rear - just change the pinion flange to suit if you're using it in the Discos rear. No need to swap over the locker unit itself, swap over the entire diff assembly, just pull it all out of the axle housing and put it into the Disco axle housing. Defender rear axle housings or diffs wont fit into a Disco2, not even the P38 type - they literally dont fit into the hole.

Defender springs are different to Disco2 both front and rear. Defender rear springs being bigger just wont work. Fronts can be made to work with a different lower spring perch as the Defender lower is ground and the D2 lower is pigtailed, but really you're better off just getting Disco2 springs which are the correct spring rate and free lengths.

The Tom Woods front shaft should fit. If it was built for a Defender then you will need to swap the front transfer case output flange over, if it is a Disco2 shaft in a Defender, then it should just bolt straight in. Never the less, you will have all of the parts options between the 2 vehicles.

    You're right, a D2 isn't a 110. It's better.

What do you mean 'only a disco' I may be rejected or even ejected…. discos are just as amazing as defenders I may be rejected or even ejected….

The only thing I don't like about the Disco 2 is they're at least 20 years old, but probably the only Disco I'd seriously consider swapping the Defender for.

Still miss mine. Great touring vehicle.

I was asked when am I going to replace mine... I'm not. There isn't anything on the market like it. The closest is the 79, but no auto, no real cup holders, steel door trims, vinyl floors, no climate control, leaf springs, ordinary seats... its still not there.

Too many good times with the Disco as well.

I would have thought the closest would be a 76,which, with a good suspension set up is not a bad vehicle, although not as safe, and not as good on fuel.Although there is now a 4 cyl model, auto as well.

As we know every vehicle is a compromise in one way or another.
