    Rear step spring removal

Doing some refurbishment on my 110
have taken off the rather rusted back step

want to dismantle it to clean and repaint
does anyone know how I can get the very
tight spring on the step off and back on ?

Suggestion - get a number of suitable thickness bits of plywood, metal, or just about anything the right thickness to be a tight fit between the turns of the spring with it at its most extended. Then lower the step - the spring should just lift off. Taping the spacers in place might be a good idea.
