Seems it is where Ford fitted a centrifugal oil filter .

The circular recess in the cover on the Puma engine cover is for an oil separator like a catch can. Ford fit it to their versions of the 2.4. It looks like the engine filter housing inverted. I was looking at a Ford Transit 2.4 this morning and noticed this .The mechanic told me what it was. Pity Land Rover did not fit it to their version of the engine.

Same actual filter as used by the TD5 apparently. I see a couple of comments on one of your links about the need for some bonnet clearance. Wonder if that's true. The TD5 filtering is brilliant, and many modern truck engines also use a centrifugal filter. Someone like Dazza could tell you if it's possible, and indeed worth it.

Will have to experiment with bits of foam protruding from the recess on the Puma cover to see how much clearance there is. I did find the reply from MILLERS OILS an interesting read. Bio stuff in the diesel is beneficial in some respects but damaging in others. Life never seems to be straight forward any more!
