Thread: What do people think of LandRover window guards?

I dont see why you need to be talked out of it...

Hey what about the full Northern Ireland spec with the steel mesh guard for the windscreen.


*If it was a city based vehicle it would be ridiculous as would the side mounted jerry can racks as neither would meet ADR compliance with regards to injury to pedestrians.

Can they be opened/dropped from inside the car? Reason for asking is the (hopefully low probability) disaster scenario where you need to exit through the window. But hey, maybe I've watched the MythBusters car-into-water episode one too many times...

This is actually a really good point! Thanks for making it. I hadn’t thought of that…

I think they can only be opened from outside the vehicle. 😱. But Im not expecting to have the guards up most of the time while driving on roads. I mainly expect to use them when driving through scrub or through the local community.

Is breaking a vehicle window from the inside while underwater really a thing? Given Pumas have electric front windows I have no confidence they would function normally submerged…

I *think* theres a legal\rego requirement that you need to be able to exit the vehicle. So you'd be OK on the cargo area windows, just not the passenger windows. I rember fitting a load barrier to a 7 seater Pajero and it needed to have an escape hatch even if the seats were removed. I could be wrong, but worth checking the rules so you dont get pinged.

A good point! But as previously mentioned I live remote in the Territory. I drive the 130 occasionally to Darwin, but honestly not much chance of the cops taking interest up here.

My insurance policy already stipulates a full external roll cage, so I don’t think the additional grills would compromise that.

Incidentally the guy who makes this stuff seems really nice and very efficient. He does a range of bespoke LandRover accessories at a very reasonable price. His name is Engineer Martin.

Some interesting points raised. I wonder how those Coaster sized buses get on with their security grilles. See them often on when you get out a bit.
