    Turbo oil seals

Just installed a new hybrid turbo core in my turbo and got it all back together and did something dumb.

Left the bung I had in the turbo oil drain pipe and bolted it back up in my haste. Fired it up and after a minute or 2 noticed oil coming from the exhaust , car was running for a couple minutes max.

Have I completely ruined the oil seals or if I clean it up and go again will it be ok ? It only leaked from the exhaust , nothing came out the front of the housing .

    It's not ideal.

I've heard of it before though.

I'd pull the bung and try again.

It is possibly ok, but it will take a while for the previous issue to "clear"...IE smoke and oil etc.

Thanks for the reply , Pulled the bung out , stripped turbo apart and cleaned thoroughly, cleaned out exhaust , bolted all back together and have just completed a good few test run and not a puff of smoke to be seen.

Looks like I may have dodged a bullet this time. Time will tell.

let me guess, it was a TD5 ?

*cough* you are not alone... back when I did heaps of TD5 hybrid cores, I did it TWICE! because being an idiot once wasn't enough.
Once on my TD5 and the other on my Dad's TD5

You are correct sir, TD5 I must admit when I saw the Black Death liquid coming from the exhaust I had a hearty and thought I had messed up the assembly. Thought it over , looked at the work bench and noticed no red bung . From combing through a few forums and some YouTube videos it seems like it’s reasonably common but usually caused by the return line coking up or poor return pipe pluming directions / angles .

In my defence my mind and eyes were all over the place having also put in a new oil cooler , all radiator hoses, de-webbed and machined manifold and all new studs .
