    1999 130 Defender ID questions.

Currently getting long neglected 130 ready for rego and have a couple of questions.
    • where is the chassis number (VIN) stamped on a 1999 130 Defender. Its not in the same place as on my Perentie, nor my Defender 6x6, or my SIII FFR. (Rh front dumb iron)
    • The attached image of an alloy plate with the VIN was loose in the vehicle. Where should it be affixed?

    Hi Diana,
The Alloy plate should be attached to the front L/H edge of the dash and visible though the bottom left corner of the windscreen.

Not sure about the actual chassis number.

Chassis number is on the outside of the chassis rail in front of the right front wheel.

I've been looking in that location, but have been expecting numbers stamped with letter/number punches like all my other vehicles*, not digits formed with dots. But thinking about it the engine number is dotted also.

Will look again in the morning.

    * No idea about the D4.

The VIN had been painted over several times. I had to use paint stripper to find any trace.

Just one more Q. In relation to the VIN behind the screen. How is it affixed? I can't find any evidence.
    Thanks everyone tor the assist

I once had rego inspection denied on my daughter's Peugeot 405 because the VIN was done by dot matrix. The inspector refused to believe it was genuine and original.

Our late mate Gary Cooke (Cookey) on this forum was a blue slip inspector amongst other activities. One Saturday morning he happened to have two Subaru WRX in for inspections, same year models. Everything appeared legitimate only the font on each plate were different to the other. Had to refer both to Police forensics to determine the genuine from the re-birth.

Had they not been presented on the same day no one would have detected the fraud.

BTW: On the 130, some rust remover has revealed the VIN much better but some emery board required followed by clear coat to make it permanently readable.

No evidence of rivet holes, the tabs must have fractured off.

Any chance of an image of the plate in place?

One though the bottom left of the windscreen
One looking straight down the inside of the windscreen between the dash and windscreen, you can just see the rivet heads.
