    R380 gearwhine in 5th at about 80k

So my R380.. done about 180k with regular oil changes. It has a whine in 5th at about 80 ish k. It seems to go away as the speeds increase or maybe it just gets drowned out by everything else.

I guess it's not that bad but it's a little annoying. Is this a common thing? Can it be fixed or is it just the nature of the beast?

    Thanks!

I think that's usually extension housing bearings.

5th whines first, then 1,2,3 start, then 4 can sometimes join in later.

Probably best to get it fixed before it breaks, as a bearing kit might fix it at this stage, if you leave it you risk damaging gears as well.

I've got 1 that is whining, but I'm playing Russian roulette with it at this stage...

I apologise for the slow reply.

The service place makes up a mix of three oils.. atf, puma gearbox oil and something else. I can look it up tomorrow.

But I have just bought some Ravenol MTF-2 which is apparently a direct replacement for what Land Rover recommend. People elsewhere have found this oil to quieten them. I will report on this.

Penrite also make progear 75-85 which may also be worth investigation.

Have you tried listening for the same noise in reverse?
If it is there in reverse, it is probably the little bearing supporting the layshaft at the back of the gearbox.

I won't be able to hear the gear noise over the screams of my passengers.

In all seriousness I haven't noticed any unusual noise in reverse.
