Thread: A/M Security?

Looks like any of a million cheap / crap alarm/immobilisers. They all use black wires so it's not obvious which wire goes where. Usually installed by butchers who cut and shut the wiring harness with anything from scotchloks to solder wrapped in cheap PVC tape.

Your best bet is to open it up and see if there are any manufacturer logos/tell-tales on the PCB, google and contact them (if they're still in business). Otherwise, follow every wire, cross check it against the vehicles wiring diagram and try and undo the damage.

Usually wires to the indicators, horn and in series with either the ignition or starter motor.

yes its a generic bit of rubbish, prolly not needed depending on local requirements for vehicle alarms.

Personally for an older Defender going old school with a pedal lock or steering lock would be more reliable.

I can drive the vehicle as it has not activated or anything but I certainly plan to trace it and remove it. Was just curious if you all had seen this one before.

Or, with my County, just leave the transfer case in neutral - not many will be able to find the T/C lever, let alone know what it does!

Generally required in WA under the immobiliser laws.

Which won't comply in WA unless the vehicle is over 25 years old (which I suppose this is). In short, it's complicated.

I needed the immobiliser on my 1988 Volvo when it was re-registered back in 2010, so I assume the 25 years is a sliding scale.

I've seen steering and pedal locks cut off in less than a minute with a battery 4" grinder (makes less noise than the horn/alarm going off and attracts less attention). If the steering lock is too hard, they just slice the wheel open. At least an electronic immobilser makes it hard to start.

yes its 25 years old no immobiliser required in WA

for an old defender i doubt they are going to that much trouble.

Sorry, wasn't paying attention. Oddly enough I do the same thing on the seppo forums when they tell me to go to Walmart.

i wish we had walmart
