how long have I got with my ticking R380L

    2002 defender TD5 R380L 450,000kms

    Hello,
I have ticking ( a couple of months now) in the gearbox which disappears with the clutch depressed, am suspecting a worn input shaft bearing. Is this a relatively urgent matter that needs addressing promptly or can I wait. Will most likely have to pay someone to do it, but that's going to hurt because I'm too tight generally to pay someone to work on the defender, usually do it all myself but this may task be beyond me.
    thanks

Suspect you're probably on the money with the input bearing, ( probably one of the rollers ) but too hard to say how long it will last, drop and discard the oil and have a look at what will probably be, given the time of year, a Christmas tree of detritus on the drain plug magnet.

Given the amount of K's, a rebuild is on the cards, but the bearings in question can be changed without stripping the box if you have a long legged hydraulic puller to remove the old bearing, and can heat the new bearing to fit

Also, because you generally do your stuff yourself means that you're not worried about doing the work. You just need guidance.

Look for Brittanica Restorations on youtube and Mike has a heap of videos on his tips and tricks for rebuilding gearboxes.

His last few recent vids have mainly been on R380 rebuilding so you can see what you'd be up against.
