I'm feeling a bit down now guys... 2 clients in today.... (I'm a vet - as in animal doctor).

First client spots my 2010 110 CC - "nice piece of kit". Her husband has a nice black 110 puma. She then goes on to tell me about her husband's 110 issues - not serious - key barrel needed to be replaced and electric windows not working. That's ok, I can live with that. She then told me that she has traded her Range Rover 8yo in - apparently sunroof continually leaked and drained water into the vehicle (is it a car or truck??) and into the wiring looms etc. Has paid aout 10s of thousands of dollars in repairs, new nav screens, totally rewired etc... She has traded it in on a Toyota Cruiser. They gave her $8000 on a vehicle that cost $100K or more 8 years ago... She's "'had' land rovers...."

Next client in - a middle aged pom lassie, also spotted the new Deefa in my car park. She grinned - I grinned back.. "Yep - a pommy truck", I said. (Thinking I may have a friend..) "Why would you buy one of those"?, she screams at me! "Have you had any problems with it"? "The last time I was in one of those we had to cross the Ural Mountains in reverse, because the gear box chucked it in".

I'm already scared and sick of people telling me what a load of ^&%%^%^&% LR are...

Now I'm feeling nervous about the lease I've just signed as of last week...

You are going to get that kind of negativity no matter what car you choose to drive.. we bought a brand new Nissan a few years ago.. $10,000 in repairs in 3 years.. my Father bought a new Toyota and has spent countless $'s in repairs in the last 3 years also.. I guess what I am trying to say is don't be put off by what people tell you, form your own opinions on your new (and glorious) car.. and bugger any one else who tells you it's not good.

In my experience the vast majority of people who whine about Land Rovers are those who a) have never had one or b) bought a lemon or didn't maintain the one they did have.. Don't let a few sad stories sully your experience you have with your car.. :)

I can't vouch for the Puma but my 2001 Td5 110 has been the most reliable vehicle i've ever owned (iv’e owned a Toyota, Nissan, BMW, Volvo and others).

I’ve put 80,000kms on it in the last 2 years, it now has 210,000kms on the clock and I drive it off road regularly, its dented, scratched, runs 35” tyres and all I have replaced is wheel bearings, a front universal joint, new brake discs and pads on the front, one ball joint, and the usual oil and filter changes… these are all typical wear maintenance items with a limited lifespan as per any vehicle be it a Toyota or Lada, it has never left me stranded and it’s still going as good as the day I bought it. :D

My 09 Puma is just about to click over 90k and its never even looked like leaving me stranded either. A few warranty issues but no show stoppers - I'd buy another one tomorrow without blinking.

My 2012 puma is now about to clock 50k. No warranty issues and is running great. It got better over time, gearbox and engine have smoothed out quite a bit. This is Pk when new.

My Puma 90 is 3 years old in 15 days time (warranty expiry date) and in 3 years of hard work (Pilbara region in WA's north west) the only issue I had was an immobiliser relay that needed replacing (9 minute job - timed).

Without calling the demons of fate onto myself, this has been my experience over the past 3 years:

My car doesn't leak water anywhere - from brand new, no warranty work.
My drive train is perfect despite having "cardboard diffs" as the nay sayers will tell you. (Taking nothing away from the people who have had genuine mechanical issues!)
My wiring has functioned flawless without rubbing through (I do out of habit do a bit of a "pre-start" before going off road and had to clip them back on the odd occasion)
My car doesn't leak fluids (oil, diesel, coolant or grease) anywhere.

And the list goes on - purely in the absence of issues. The biggest peace of mind remain that Land Rover will fix it for you if something does go wrong.

Sue (as posted below) has relayed some horror stories relating to the issues on other marques her father and herself had with stuff that would be basic warranty work. I work in FIFO civil construction and the amount of times the brand new mine spec Prados and Hiluxes had to be fetched of site on tilt trays beggars belief.

So, we remain a devout minority in a country dominated by Toyota and Nissan which will most probably never change. I get the "why do you need 8 off road settings if 2 will do, or "Hope you've bought 2 Defenders (second one for spares...), or "I had a mate you owned one of those in the '70s and nothing but trouble..." etc nearly every day and I just ignore them and smile to myself knowingly that they will need to spend double their car's value to even approach the ability of ours when delivered brand new.

In 17 years of Defender ownership I have driven them in Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique), Europe (England, Wales, Scotland, Spain, Netherlands and France) and now Australia (WA only!) I have never been left stranded by a Defender. This cannot be said about any other brand of 4x4...

I think a lot of these stories about unreilable land rovers are monkey whispers anyway... a friend of a bloke's mother inlaw's sister had one of them back in the 70's (series 2 with a holden red installed and wired up by a blind man in the scrub back of woop woop), of course this somehow relates to a brand spankers Puma!? :p
