Here is my little truck, picked it up from Albany Land Rover last Easter (23 April 2011) not sure what I've been doing but this is the first photo! Just love it makes my heart skip a beat every time I see it. Actually my heart skips a beat anytime I see a Defender!
The lack of an air inlet on the driver's side makes it most likely a 200Tdi (rather than 300). Re the diff lock he is probably referring to the centre diff common to all 90/110/130, which is lockable in high and low range. At $1000 you just got the bargain of the century, although it sounds like that gearbox needs some money spent on it.
There is no air inlet on the drivers side, but there are two on the passengers side( one on top of the guard and one the side ). The owner did say that the diff lock was in the rear axle. The rear axle does have different hubs on it . (see photo) And yes I do think ihave got abargin even if the gearbox does need a rebuild, I sill have a cheep Defender. Defender 25-2-12 001.jpg
ok what year photos under the bonnet etc, 4 speed or 5, and how do you know its an Isuzu or a 200tdi?
Its a 94 model and it has a 5 speed in it. I'm fairly sure it's not an Isuzu. (see photo) Defender 25-2-12 006.jpg
I gave it a wash yesterday and it think I doubled it's value. Anyway it's time to head down the shed for a bit more tinkering

Looking at the pics, the engine IS a 200Tdi.
It is probably complianced as a 94 model, but built in late 93.
The gearbox will be an LT77,if it is up for a complete rebuild, you might be better off getting a short bellhousing R380 which is a stronger box,and available from O/S for a lot less than it costs to get an LT77 rebuilt properly.
The rear hubs are aftermarket H/D items, but who knows what is fitted to the diff ?But there are no lockers that only work in low range.
If you have no air/vacuum lines going to the diff, then you can check for an auto locker by jacking the rear wheels off the ground, releasing the handbrake and turning the wheels by hand, make sure vehicle in is neutral. If opposite wheel turns in the opposite direction then you have a normal open diff centre.

200 tdi, your gearbox will be a LT77. not known to be the best of the bunch, these gear box's also came in discos of the same years, ( they also came with autos)
personalty i prefer the 200 to the 300, both are easy to get a bit more GO from.
the rear hubs used to look like the front ones, what you have there is just a bout on replacement for the black plastic bit, a bit of bling realty.
and by the looks of it you have gotten a real deal
Danny was picked up last Friday. WOW what a difference to my V8D2!! We took him for a drive on Sunday for a play at Burrinjack...highway noise is fine and just a pure joy to drive. The gearbox is super and handles the torque so much better than D2 - I was able to accelerate up each highway hill whereas the D2 lost a little speed. The D2 is a lounge chair in comparison! The only negative is the silly little fuel tank.
