A thought for down the track

300 tdi into a county, hard or easy? I presume you'd have to take the box over as well.

I would have thought buying a written off vehicle would be the go and transferring motor and box together. A disco v8/tdi with auto/manual box would be the easiest to find. V8 disco would be the cheapest. The 4BD1 110 5 speed ute sold on ebay recently for under $2000 would have been a good donor vehicle.

You probably have the metal transmission cover. The 1986 model had the larger pvc cover. There may not be enough room for the levers on the box if using the metal cover - but I don't know.

Hi Richard, I've done a auto Tdi into Defender, and it is a good conversion. Far more pleasanter to drive!
County conversion is easy, but a donor vehicle will make life easier, crossmembers, exhaust, etc all will change over from a Defender easily.
I would also take the opportunity to convert to all the Defnder brakes, (4 Wheel discs) and booster/ master cyl, etc.

All that is req is a rolled 110/ 130....Good luck!

The one in Lewy110's post belongs to Richard Asquith (spelling?) and it is a V8 and it won best county at Cooma. He was a landrover dealer which would have help with sourcing bits for the conversion.
