    TD5 Fuel Tank

    On from the water in the fuel incident, how does one check for water or drain the bottom of the tank to ensure there is no water. Removing the tank is quite an exercise, luck if you don't break the fuel line connectors. Cheers, Erich.

    Seeing you are coming up here Erich - The light in my D2 TD5 started to come on occasionally since I filled up at Katherine on the drive in from Darwin. Don't know if was coincidence or not but it did not happen in Darwin or the drive down to Katherine.

    Thought I'd pass it on for what it's worth.

    If there is any water in the tank it will be picked up by the pump and sent to the filter housing under the RHS wheel arch. On the bottom of this there is a drain knob. Hold a glass beaker underneath the filter and unsrew the knob. When the beaker is about half full of fuel close the knob. If you look at the fuel in the beaker, any water present will collect under it and ill look like a bubble (but at the bottom of the galss). This should be done regularly, at least monthly, or a short running time after you fill up if you suspect the fuel you are getting is dodgy.

    If you have the original plastic tank, and you suspect it has water in it then the tank will have to be removed to empty it fully. If you have an after market tank you may be lucky enough to have a drain plug.

    I just unscrew my water sensor completely. When it runs dry I screw it back on, connect it back up and follow the priming sequence outlined in the owner hand book.

    Expect the electrical connector to be hard ( HARD ) to get off if it hasn't been done for ages.

    Wd-40 with the red hose things are good to blow out all the mug.

    Thanks Dale, it's good to know about the in Katherine. Hope it was a coincidence & it isn't an ongoing problem for you. We won't be going into Katherine as we normally fill up at Mataranka before heading in. Over the years we have usually filled up at the same places between here and Gove and the fuel has been OK. However, this year we are driving our Defender instead of the Disco and since we have a greater fuel capacity in the Defender I guess our fuel stops will be different. Will see how we go anyhow.

    My best mate will be heading through Katherine in a couple of months time so I'll tell him about the servo. He & his family will be off from Gapuwiyak to Cobourg.
