Newbie wheel/tyre querie
i'm after a second set of wheels tyres for my 04 extreme and am unsure where to start looking. i have been advised that steel are the way to go but from there?? second hand, new (which ones are recommended?). in terms of tyres i think that i am after all terrains (which ones?) as being a newcomer to it all i'm not sure what i will end up doing the most. probably mainly touring. plan is to keep the alloys and road tyres on it for daily use. appreciate any advice....

A lot depends on the size of the tyre you're thinking of using... steel rims can be modified to adjust the offset, at a price. Steel has the advantage that it can be 'bashed' into shape after an off-road mishap but beware some of the fancier designs which can crack with rough usage. I'd look for a second hand set that suits and spend the money you save on a nice paint job.

g'day Fender Fan,
Firstly, welcome to aulro.
I have a set of rims of a defender 130 that I use in the bush although they are only 6.5" wide so this limits the tyre size - if you want to go for "fatties" then you'll need 7" and up. Early defender steel wheels are ok too although I think they are only 6" wide (?)
Many people use the steel "disco 1" wheels and you'll find them from time to time on ebay etc.
Any Disco 1 (pre 1998) and Ranger Rover Classic (pre 1995) will fit on the defender.
You'll see some rangie alloys appear second hand and these are fine for you average offroader - they'll get a bit scratched but unless your planning extreme stuff will be ok - advantage is the alloys are a bit lighter.
(Don't go for the Disco 2 , or post 1995 Rangie wheels - they don't fit).
There will be aftermarket stuff around too but I'm not as familiar with them.
Wheel and tyre selection is a very popular subject on this forum - if you use the search function you'll find lots - Have fun and enjoy the site
