County dash doing my head in.

Hey all Im trying to install a new stereo and CB in the county. Basically it wont fit because of all the wires in the dash. It's like bloody like Forte Knox to get into and all the friggin heater/aircon stuff in the way which both dont work.

Just wondering has anyone done away with the heating /cooling system and gone with just the air vents? Id be happy with just a small heater to demist the windscreen and air straight from the front vents. And it would be nice to do away with any wire thats inessential.

I felt like smashing the whole dash today

Removing the factory aircon and freeing up the front vents is usually the first county mod made. There are a heap of previous topcs on here if you run through a search on 'vents'. It does require some fiddly work with spot welds though.

    Hehehe...

Maybe just put in a dash pod or roof console?

It isn't difficult to make your own as long as you measure everything properly and take it slowly and carefully.

You could make it out of MDF or fiberglass (if you can work 'glass) and then cover it in vinyl?

    Good luck regardless!

    I've been there

I am just going to change the whole firewall, dash & heater unit to a non-aircon unit, with opening vents and a standard heater. A huge pain, but worth it in the end.

My air vents are sealed up & I have a modded dash, so I installed an air blower from an old Patrol. You could look at a similar setup using, maybe a smiths heater??

I wonder how long before someone wants to fit vents to a 2007/8 Defender?

I'm in the process of fitting a county AC to my non AC county. If you live in a hot part of the country like I do (Scone) on go 4x4ing you can open the vents and windows turn the fan on it still gets bloody hot in the cab! The dash boards can be frustrating but they do come apart ok if you take a little time to find the screws. The AC's in the countys have always been know not to work very well but a few changes makes a huge difference. The main one is through away the harrison compressor and put a new sanden compressor on it. Use the brackets of a Disco (if it's a V8) and it all bolts up. A snorkel off a 200tdi and a little pipe work gets you fresh are into the cab without the fan going. The vents just give you another water leak to fix!

Put in a over head console. Got one in mine and keeps dash nice and simple.
