Thread: Bringing a 90 over from UK??

Make sure you read the specifics regarding the importation of vehicles into Australia... not only do you have to have owned the vehicle but you have to prove that you have continually used the vehicle for 12 months... They will ask you to provide
1. The date you purchased the vehicle
2. That you have actually used the vehicle (for Aussies you will have to provide copies of Passports to prove you were in that country for that period that you owned the vehicle) there is a break of 40 days over the 1 year that allows you a break away from that country (holidays I guess)

And make sure you read the most up to date info possible as this is where I came unstuck... I now have a 4 month old vehicle that I bought for a steal (Defence members don't pay VAT and get 15%off) however the vehicle needs to be out of the UK within 1 year and cannot be sold in the EU..

My choices are running out real quick as I have to return back to my Job in Australia and unless I get unpaid leave to make up for 5 months continuous use I am in big trouble

My other option is to come back to the UK .... Use the vehicle then totally strip it and send it back as parts... And I am not sure I can get away with that

Read the DOTRS website and the Customs website... There is a lot to consider

I am also tracking down the details of a company in NSW who would be able to provide you with a compliance plate... Unless these guys are willing to provide one at a cost you will find it exceptionally difficult to get your car on the road

Not just aussies, i had to photocopy every page in my passport as well, to prove i had lived with the car

Also i don't know why you are worried about getting a compliance plate as they are the easyest of the lot to get. Took 3 mins for my 90 to get it

compliance is easy like reads said.....as the 90 has been sold here before, just not for very long..so its not like your trying to bring a totally new car into the country

I brought a 2002 90 HardTop from UK to WA in 2004. Had a couple of problems.
Customs said I didn't have enough miles on the clock, despite owning/driving it for two years. Tried to charge duty as a new import.
Slightly difficult to get it insured. Insurance companies weren't then set up for 90's, only 110's. No classification for a HardTop (.Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Finally decided it is a 'panel van').
To get compliance plate, had to fit kilometres only speedo, and change driver's door mirror to plain glass.
Oblong W.A. number plate stuck out from side of vehicle. Had to fit bracket to stop it swinging in the breeze.
Biggest ongoing problem is being stared at by other Defender drivers. Have been asked in car park 'why I blocked up the rear side windows?'
