    Don't say rash things within earshot of the car

    I learned my lessons with my last Rangie not to say things that the car might hear, like "I haven't broken anything lately", or "it's been going really well". I had thought I might be past that with my more recent Defender (Shorty), but no such luck. On Sunday I just popped out to visit the Gold Coast LR Club on their driver training day, and distinctly remember saying standing by the Shorty "I am just coming to watch", and "I haven't seen Rick lately" (the local LR guru mechanic).
    To cut to the chase, sometime later on a short sharp steep hill, with tree roots across the ruts (=bouncy bouncy) and a big bang (the sound of which I recognised from breaking diffs and axles in previous LRs), I lost all traction and had to be pulled up the remainder of the hill by a Rangie (the indignity of it all). We found that I had no drive to any of the wheels, although both drive shafts were spinning.
    The next day on further inspection, but without yet removing anything, it appears I have broken the rear diff and the front short axle.
    I remember reading on this forum recently about LR diffs and axles now being made of cheese, so I was wondering what suggestions people had for upgrading if you deem it necessary. (eg tougher axles from HiTough, CVs? Although unless I am wrong I have still not ever broken a CV...) shhhhh....
    It was easy in the last Rangie, maxi-drive in the rear and cheap second hand replacements everywhere else, which worked a treat.
    or at least it did, until I said something rash within earshot.....

    Personally I've gone with HiTough rear axles, ARB front and rear lockers, and I'm currently looking at the front end.

    Couple of ideas here.
    1. Replace the front axles with HiTough units.
    2. Replace axles and CV's with Longfields or similar.

    Really depends what you are trying to accomplish. Either option will work well.

    Personally i think when playing with your driveline... make a choice on what sort of dollars you're willing to play with... then work out your combinations from there

    Thanks guys

    for your suggestions--bearing in mind current budget I will probably not go for the tougher options, although if maxi drives were still around I would probably opt for that. Go standard and you break stuff don't you, so it's all down to dollars.....
