as already mentioned it reduces emissions, in particular, oxides of nitrogen.

It does this by allowing some exhaust gasses into the air inlet tract on overrun and under certain light load conditions which lowers the combustion temperature to below that required for the oxides of nitrogen to form.

Great for the environment and it costs you nothing in terms of fuel effeciency power or engine longevity while its working properly.

once its no longer working properly it can stick open robbing you of power and introducing bulk quantities of soot into the engine. Combine that soot with a little oil that comes from the engine crankcase ventilation system and all of a sudden youve got fresh valve grinding paste making it into the engine. When was the last time you heard of an engine manufacturer reccomending that?...

theres a handfull of options for getting around it.

    1. clean it up, thats what I did to mine the first time.
    2. blank up the controls, thats just a case of pulling off and blanking off the vac lines and gives you the excuse of "dunno officer the mechanic must have done it when I took it to him complaining of rough idling"
    3. blank of the exhaust line as well, as they can still leak a little by not quite closing up over time
    4. remove it (I did)

the later ones also have a butterfly valve that closes off the intake manifold and increasing the intake of the exhaust gasses and removing that one gives you a little more engine braking capability.

It is well worth doing the exhaust and intercooler later on if u are not affraid to spend some more money.

Triumph Rover Spares have the best looking intercooler that i have found so far in Australia as it has fully welded tanks and a very good core in it
Intercoolers for Defender / Discovery - Upgrades - Triumph Rover Spares South Australia

The only down side is when u get more power u want another gear on the highway but hey that is where a discovery transfer case comes in

Considering a properly chipped TD5 will still pass emissions testing without EGR its not a real issue

I'd be more concerned with any petrol vehicle over 50,000km in age with a now defunct Cat converter and Vapour recovery (Charcoal canister)...
These items should be checked but never are!!!

Off Topic - Ever noticed the correlation between cancer incidence rate increases and the year 1985.....Do some research.... Its an eye opener!

AND PLEASE PEOPLE, Dont be sheep and follow the 'party line' on Carbon emissions...

Vehicles account for 8% of all emissions in Australia. Cattle are one of the worst...

Carbon trading isnt going to reduce this, just make users PAY FOR IT...

So either eat fruit and berries, or understand, that Earth will warm up, its part of the natural cycle....

And one day again, it'll have another ice age too....
Then what? Lets have a "Raise Carbon Emissions scheme"???

Blknight.aus Has the original prototype unit sitting at his place now!

    Discowhite runs my IC.....

Unless you feel the urge to run a large mapping intercooler upgrades are good to have but not necessary...

    But they dont hurt!!!

    In NSW:
    1972 11554 with cancer, 61.5 mean age, 1/5 incidence by 75yo, 1/8 mortality by 75yo.
    1985 18421 with cancer, 63.5 mean age, 1/4 incidence by 75yo. 1/7 mortality by 75yo.
    2004 34187 with cancer, 66.1 mean age, 1/3 incidence by 75yo, 1/9 mortality by 75yo.

Interestingly, my chem lecturer at uni was saying that the introduction of unleaded was a problem due to the level of known carstenogens that are produced, and that they travel to low points in the terrain and just sit. He also commented that lead just burnt and fell out of the exhaust.

I also tend to think that modern plastics, chemicals and microwaves are contributors also.

    Cool...

Now as to making your Defender go better...

    1. Remove ECU
    2. Package up
    3. Express freight it to me
    4. Wait impatiently with anticipation
    5. Drop me some $$$
    6. Open parcel with glee
    7. Install ECU
    8. Drive
    9. Try to wipe silly smile off face...
