changing pads is very easy. remove wheel, remove locating pins, remove pads, push pistons back carefully (take cap off fluid resevoir) and make sure it doesnt overflow, insert new pads, put in locating pins, refit wheel.

I would be suprised if it needs discs or pads at 49k, unless you use it off road a lot....

Discs is a bigger job.

For best results you should at least skim the discs every time you change the pads...

when measured if the tapering on the disc is under 1mm total the lip is also less than 1mm and doesnt interfere with the new pads then in my book machining is optional but should be left to the owners discretion not the mechanics.

if theres tapering and any part of the disc is on minimum thickness then the disc should be discarded.

I worked for a mechanic and he would machine with every pad change this way he could insure that the pad to rotor contact is perfect thus better brakes and you can't argue with that, you also get better pad life as the pad and rotor surface is flat as apossed to warped, the conditions you drive in will effect how much your rotors and pads ware though if dusty or muddy this kind of driving gets grit in between the rotor and pads.
