Serious TDCi issues: a personal experience

DON'T PANIC

I am happy to say that my experience dealing with the dealer with both of these known issues has been positive.

You have to be positive otherwise you wouldn't continue to own a Land Rover.

1. Clutch Rattle:

My post I think explains the symptoms. The dealer is aware of the issue so a new clutch is on order.

2. Engine Knocking:

A knocking noise does not necessarily require a complete engine replacement. Sensors are another story. In my case these are also on order.

I guess my message is our dealers are on the same learning curve as us...cut them some slack, learn as much as you can and work with them. Without places like this and Defender2 we'd all be floundering.

Should I sell her?

Hell no and I'm happy.

our engine rattle is back mahn.....

reared its ugly head in victoria so we deffinatly know its linked to the cold and damp mornings as up until yeaterday the car has not missed a heart beat

the engine rattle you have had yours in for......states on GTR that is a noticable audiable KNOCK.... was yours? or was yours a rattle like we experience.

oh by the way just pulled into the drive way and the puma has sprayed oil all over the left hand side of the car

i think its crying that its home

Hi Lou,

Hope and sounds like you three had a great trip.

As for my knocking experience, it was accompanied by the engine light coming on and a loss of power hence the sensors. A persistant loud knocking when cold not accompanied by the engine light and loss of power suggests something else.

The clutch rattle is best diagnosed amongst other things by releasing the clutch with the engine running whilst in neutral. The quicker you release the clutch the louder the noise when the clutch engages. But it is a rattle as opposed to a knock.

Maybe we should compare rattles and knocks...you guys live nearby me so maybe we could exchange noises this weekend.

These little things are sent to test us.

Common issue and easy enough fix if the part is in stock.

The engine rattle is a common complaint for the 3.0ltr Prado,Hilux as well. Pat

can i fit one of those new sensors to my isuzu county, it rattles a bit too.

mahn I have quoted you because we have had the engine light,lose of power and limp mode with the rattle (more than once)...but i would describe it has a really loud rattle not a knocking...

reason i'm asking is i'm not sure whether you are using the same dealer as me but our car has done this from 3 months old it is now over a year and the dealer cant find a problem other than the car throwing a few codes up suggesting the pressure relief valve on the common rail...

i have always thought that this service bulletin, was possibly related only that we have a rattle not a knock. and the problem is it only happens in the morning then the car runs like a champ.

the garage have not been able to recreate it....when does your car do it all the time?

do these engines have hydraulic tappets ??

My engine rattle is still there only less now that the weather is warmer. I sent an email to Land Rover Customer Care directly regarding this and my windscreen leak. They eventually rang me back and maintained the "keep an eye on it" line.

A couple of weeks ago it happened again very badly. I was stopped in a driveway 2 minutes from home making a U-turn and the idle suddenly went all rattly and kept on rattling until I pressed the accellerator - then it was fine again. No warning lights, just a lot of noise.

Could it be someting to do with the choke???
