I hear that noise (from the dealers) when they don't know what it is or what to do. Of course they can't trust you, the driver, to provide a good enough description of where to start investigating.

I would guess that the expander is sticking, probably because it is full of mud or dust, or has got rusty. This will be because the boot on it (trying to remember whether there is a boot on the Defender, or the cable doesn't have one) is damaged, or water and dust/mud has got in due to deep wading.

Needs to be taken apart and lubricated before it devides to stick on permanently. This is a relatively simple job, and few if any parts are likely to be needed.

After another drive today, the boing spring noise happened again - I had pulled up in our driveway (turning through 90 degrees) and got out to open the gate. Once I got back into the vehicle - BOIING!

I hadn't touched the handbrake! So I'm guessing it must be something to do with the suspension.

It is also interesting to note that it has only ever happened in this same spot - in our driveway. The road camber is fairly severe leading me to think it's got something to do with the springs. It sounds like it's coming from the front driver's side.

I get the occasional "boing" from my rear springs, have from new, sometimes when articulating, sometimes cornering, especially on dirt. It is quite loud, I assume it is the springs somehow "resettling themselves" into position, new springs didnt change it happening.I think its a Fender thing due to the sound travelling up through the cargo area, frightens the crap outa you the first time.Its been happening for over 5 years and I've had no issues.

I have no experience with the newer Landies, so please excuse my ignorance, but do they have their handbrakes on the back wheels now? If so, it could also explain it happening when you released the handbrake - a sticky handbrake cable. It could also be a sticking brake piston (but it may not be bad enough to jam them on) or an odd worn-in notch somewhere. I'm still thinking brakes because we use them a lot when arriving or leaving home.

The only other thing I could suggest is if you have an LPG tank. They seem (to me at least) to make some odd noises at times. Or maybe you could have some roaming item in the car that moves just right. I've had a rattle which I thought was one of my gearsticks. It turned out to be my Maglite on the dash.

Thanks for trying to help - but I've now discovered that the handbrake has nothing to do with it - I'm pretty sure it is the Suspension. Crump has had the same issue (see above) - I think the worst thing is it scared the crap out of me when it happened!

It doesn't happen driving along - just when I get back into the vehicle after turning into my driveway which is quite cambered.

PS - The handbrake works on the transmission - not on the disc brakes. I've got no LPG tank - it's a diesel and the noise is definitely something from outside the cabin

I'm not saying I know what it is or if its good or bad, just my assumption, I'm blissfully ignorant.On recollection it did it on a rockshelf at Kroombit when Mrs Ho Har was navigating, and she never said anything, so I assumed it was normal for all Defenders.But like you say its a definite"boing' like when you belt a trampoline spring against the frame.Perhaps someone who knows more about suspension and less about trampolines can elaborate???
