No Low Range or Difflock Selection

Hello Everyone, I have searched everywhere on the forum sure that this problem wouldn't be unique but can't find anything!

My transfer case has stopped selecting low range and won't select the difflock either. I have pulled the panel over the case off to have a look as the lever is floppy and everything on the outside seems to be working correctly.

Has anyone had this prob before?
I don't know if it is of consequence but the transfer case has been jumping out of high range into neutral for several weeks. It now doesn't do this and is firmly in high range.

    Thanks everyone.

It would help to know exactly which model you have, but assuming that it is the LT230 transfer case, this has a rather complex set of internal linkages. There are several pins or pivots which could have come out and result in these symptoms, plus the possibility of parts of the linkage having broken, although I would think this is unlikely.

    Hi John,

I have a 96 300tdi and I expect it is the LT230. I have noticed since I put up the post that the difflock is selectable and it only seems to have stopped selecting neutral or low range. I wonder if the reason why the manual has no mention of transfer case repairs, that it is too complex to trust to anyone but a dedicated specialist?

    Thanks for your reply.

lack of use can cause some problems but if its not that its usually the linkage being loose and not giving a full throw.. you really need to be watching it with a good torch while someone else actuates it for you to work that bit out....

Any decent gearbox shop should be able to do the lt230 if they can get the parts.
