    Mod Chip?

Hi all I have a 2003 defender wagon with nearly 200k, I bought it secondhand sometime back, it is a great vehicle never had any issues with it.

The questions i have is Mod Chips? What/how much difference do they make to performance? how much are they? how would i tell if i already have it done?

    Thanks

    Dave

    Hello Dave,
There are lots of posts on this discussion. Just do a search on "Chippping a Defender" or similar. I have mine chipped, through Tombie 2, and it gives me a much smoother power delivery. I am used to it now (have had it chipped for about 3 years), so can't really compare to what it was like when I bought it any more. I also had it chipped to Disco TD5 power, not any more, as I don't want to race the thing.

    Cheers,
    Ken

    Upping the TD5

    G'day Heggs,

I have a 04 TD5 130, bought it December last year and have been up to Karratha and back plus a trip or two down to Katanning. I have previously owned two Deefer 110's (300Tdi and Td5) wagons, but I have felt that the 130 was a bit of a slug, especially after fitting 255/85R16 BFG Mud Terrains (effectively taller gearing, but made the speedo spot on).

Two weeks ago I had Tombie2 reprogramme the ECU to Stage 1 standard, plus in the same time I have added a snorkel, a new air filter and removed the hyclone centrifugal crud remover from the airbox as well as the bellow connector on the exhaust header pipe. I also have a EGR bypass kit on its way from pommyland.

So far the response is quite dramatic. Although still sluggish from a standing start, the turbo input is more marked and longer lasting....so "Bev" accelerates on the roll far better. Even choofing along at 100-110kmh she still has plenty left for a road train or hill climb. Last weekend I did a 1900km round trip to the NE Goldfields and I loved it, especially the Perth hills where she was singing along up the gradients at 110kmh.

From my chats with Tombie2 and JC, 02 TD5 onwards the ECU can be reprogrammed on the bench. It's the silver box in the drivers seatbox with red and black connectors....outside of driving it, unless the previous owners marked the unit the only way to tell if had already been modded would be a tech specialist bench checking the programming.

    Cheers,

thanks for the info, I have located the ecu and nothing is marked on it or anything like that, my td5 sits at 100-110 with out too much problem shes a bit sluggish up hills and from takeoff, I already have the snorkel fitted. I might just have to send it away and have it checked. how much and how long did it take to have reprogrammed?

    ecu reprogramme

    G'day,

Suggest you give Tombie2 a PM and discuss your needs.

Dispatched my ecu to him by Australian Air Express and he received it Tues lunch. Toll Priority had the task of the return trip (which they stuffed up at the Perth end of things) so didn't get it til Friday morning. Took 5 minutes to plug in and vooooom.

    Cheers,

    ECU Upgrade

Hey Heggs....my comment - JUST DO IT...!!

you wont be dissapointed - had my 2005 TD5 ECU re-mapped by Tombie about 3 months ago...

Marked increase in performance and no turbo lag....all done in the space of a week.

    cheers
