Thread: Damn dust..... Snorkel Pre Filters on Defender?

I use a Donaldson pre-cleaner on my TD5 D2 when the dust is bad enough. I've read about it not working at higher speeds but have evidence that it still collects dust. I don't use it all the time due to the extra noise and I suspect it might increase fuel consumption at higher speeds/engine loads.

i had one on my last 300tdi and found it actually improved the performance of the vehicle. made less noise than the usual snorkel head as well...

was still on it when i sold it..

I use a donaldson pre cleaner for desert trips (or if I think it going to be dusty)

Last trip it certainly collected plenty of dust/sand and if the fuel consumption was higher, it wasn't enough to worry about.

We used pre-cleaners and droopies (snorkel socks) on our Simpson - Central Aus Trip. The Droopies collected way more dust than the precleaner did, and the airfilter in the Defender didn't need changing / cleaning. The Droopies are about $40 for a set of 3, they're like a Finer Filter type of foam sock.

There is a precleaner advailible with looks like a normal donaldson one , but is very different inside.
It works by a spining arm or blades inside on ballbearings driven by the engines inlet air flow through the precleaner.
The spining effect of the internal parts throws out most of the dust down and out side of the unit so there is no cleaning needed.
Cummins Aust used to sell them.
I have seen these units work in the worse conditions with industrail vehicles.
These things are fantastic, but do have some draw backs.

Must be size matched to your engine
They make a spining sound for a minute or two after you turn off the vehicle while they wind down.
I think the brand used to be called SK, but I cannot find any reference to that name and this site may be the lastest version of the design.

My vote is for the snorkel socks as well. Used them on the Cape and other offroad work

Thinking outside of the square - I know of guys that use the 'pantyhose' type anklets that women buy from supermarkets over the head of their snorkel......
