Thread: What are the Max Towing Weights for a 1994 Defender 90?

I'm pretty sure the towing capacity is still 3.5t braked and 750kg unbraked. The same as the 110 and 130.

On Redbook it gives the specifications:

These are of a Td5 90, but I would guess it would be the same for a Tdi

I reckon you will be hard pressed to find a 90 though unless you already have one lined up. And if you do, you're a very lucky man

Yeah the 90 is the same as the 110 . My 90 is a 1995 300 Tdi and as said can tow 3.5t braked and 750kg unbraked.

although did get some funny looks with the 90 with its roof of towing a big car trailer with a Disco on it

(i was always told that In the Uk it can tow 4 ton if the trailer has air brakes, same as the rest of the defenders Well my dad used to tow one around the UK in a 110 County v8 )

From Tdi Owners manual

300Tdi all models:
Unbraked - 750kg (on-road) 500kg (off-road)
Trailers with overrun brakes - 3500kg (on-road) 1000kg (off-road)
4 wheel trailers with coupled brakes - 4000kg (on-road) 1000kg (off-road)

Most Defenders will be limited in towing weight by the raiting on the tow ball and tow bar. Most towing arrangements using the 50 mm ball coupling appear to be rated to 3500 kg.

Both are suited to towing heavy trailers and farm machinery but the difference I recall seeing in the LR brochures in towing ability between the 110 and 90 is that the 110 is better for highway and long distances. They recommend using the 90 for short distances even though they have the same rated ability mainly because of the greater possibility that the shorter wheelbase may jack-knife than the long one. Other than that the 90 is a fantastic machine.

capacity is as above, and in my opinion the 90 is better at towing than both the 110 and 130, due to a much shorter distance between the rear axle centre line and the tow ball.

These days I would think State regulations are more likely to limit the towing capacity.

I seem to recall some regulation saying the trailer mass can not exceed the towing vehicle mass, regardless of brake setups.

Mind you, I could well be wrong.
